Battling chinch bugs ...
Q: My St. Augustine lawn had chinch bugs last year and the year before. What can I do to keep these pests out of the lawn?
A: Being observant and waiting for the first signs of chinch-bug damage is still the best way to control these pests so as not to over-apply pesticides. Most gardeners have gotten pretty good at recognizing the yellow spots that quickly turn brown when the pests are present. After checking the edges of the spots as they merge into the green grass for chinch bugs, the gardeners then make a decision whether or not a spray is needed.
Regretfully, some lawns are chinch-bug bait, and they do seem to have the pest year after year. Also the pesticides do not seem to be as good at controlling the chinch bugs as in the past. These hard-to-diagnose and problem lawns are likely best treated with a spring chinch-bug control to reduce the pest populations. Select one of the products found at your local garden center and follow the label instructions to make the best treatment.
